The present invention relates to detergents and cleaning compositions that comprise a degreasing agent and an effective amount of a specific type of degreasing boosting agent, such as alkanediols having a carbon chain from 5 to 14 carbon atoms, glyceryl caprylate, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, ethyl hexyl glycerin, tropolone, or a mixture of said degreasing boosting agents, and a surfactant, and the use of said detergents and cleaning compositions for the preparation of a detergent and cleaning product for household, institutional and industrial application. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method of treating a stained and/or soiled substrate using the detergents and cleaning compositions according to the present invention. Additionally, the present invention relates to the use of specific boosting substances as defined herein for boosting the degreasing power of a degreasing detergent and cleaning composition and improving cleaning performance of a degreasing detergent and cleaning composition. Moreover, the present invention relates to a method of boosting the degreasing power of a degreasing detergent and cleaning composition and of improving the cleaning performance of a degreasing detergent and cleaning composition by adding an effective amount of a specific degreasing boosting agent, such as alkanediols having a carbon chain form 5 to 14 carbon atoms, glyceryl caprylate, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, ethyl hexyl glycerin, tropolone, or a mixture of said degreasing boosting agents, to said detergent and cleaning composition. Finally, the present invention relates to the use of at least one degreasing boosting agent, such as alkanediols, as defined herein, glyceryl caprylate, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, ethyl hexyl glycerin, tropolone, or a mixture of said degreasing boosting agents, as defined herein as degreaser and/or as replacement for a solubilizer.
