Microorganisms are genetically engineered to continuously produce fatty acids, fatty alcohols, cultured protein, or any combination thereof by microbial fermentation, particularly by microbial fermentation of a gaseous substrate. The microorganisms are C1-fixing. The production of fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and cultured proteins can be improved. This can be improved through the expression of 3-hydroxyacyl-ACP:CoA transacylases.

A method and apparatus for inoculating a bioreactor with a C1-fixing strain is disclosed. In particular, the present disclosure relates to the cost-efficient methods and apparatus for inoculating a bioreactor with a C1-fixing strain for production of protein, such as single cell protein or cultured protein, by microbial fermentation of a gaseous substrate.

Provided herein is a genetically engineered microorganism comprising knock-in of DNA at an acetolactate decarboxylase gene locus. Replacement of the acetolactate decarboxylase gene with DNA encoding one or more native or nonnative enzymes confers certain advantages, including fermentation stability and increased production of native and nonnative products from gaseous substrates.

The systems and methods disclosed herein provide for the efficient separation of gas from fluid comprising liquid. In particular, gas separator systems and methods for use in bioreactor systems and operations are disclosed herein providing an efficient means to remove gaseous waste products, unreacted gaseous substrates, and or inert gas from broth of the biological fermentation of carbon substrates using a microorganism biocatalyst.

The invention provides for the integration of a CO-consuming process, such as a gas fermentation process, with a CO 2 electrolysis process. The invention is capable of utilizing a CO 2 -comprising gaseous substrate generated by an industrial process and provides for one or more removal modules to remove at least one constituent from a CO 2 -comprising gaseous substrate prior to passage of the gaseous substrate to a CO 2 electrolysis module. The invention may further comprise one or more pressure modules, one or more CO 2 concentration modules, one or more O 2 separation modules, and/or an H 2 electrolysis module. Carbon conversion efficiency is increased by recycling CO 2 produced by a CO-consuming process to the CO 2 electrolysis process.

Integrated process for providing raw materials to a downstream operation to generate an article of manufacture. A carbon black production process is integrated with a gas fermentation process, and a feedstock preparation process is integrated with gas fermentation process. Both carbon black and a gas fermentation product are provided to a downstream operation. Secondary products from the carbon black process may be used in the gas fermentation process. Byproducts from the feedstock preparation process may be provided to the downstream operation or may be passed to the carbon black process. In certain aspects, the fermentation product may be ethanol, isoprene, butane diol, and/or ethylene. In certain aspects, the byproduct may be metal, metal oxide, char, silica, and/or steel. In certain aspects, the secondary product may be hydrogen and/or carbon dioxide. The downstream operation may be to generate plastic products, rubber products, tires, textiles, clothes, and the like.

The present disclosure relates to single cell protein (SCP) products obtained from Cupriavidus necator that has been engineered to produce a favorable fatty acid profile. The biomass produced by the C. necator and the SCP products that include it contain unsaturated fatty acids that are not naturally produced by C. necator.

An integrated process and system for the production of at least one gas fermentation product from a gaseous stream has been developed. The disclosure provides improved carbon utilization through both the recycle of a bioreactor tail gas via various different flow schemes and the employment of a CO 2 to CO conversion system such as a reverse water gas shift unit and hydrogen separation unit. Recycling of the bioreactor tail gas and employment of a CO 2 to CO conversion process provides for favourable H 2 :CO molar ratios of the feed to the gas fermentation bioreactor(s) for enhanced production of fermentation products.

The disclosure relates to a method for producing at least one product from CO and optionally H 2 , or from CO 2 and H 2 . The method comprises introducing a gaseous substrate comprising at least CO and optionally H 2 , or at least CO 2 and H 2 into a first-stage bioreactor containing a culture of at least one microorganism in a liquid nutrient medium and fermenting the gaseous substrate to produce one or more first-stage product; and incorporating the one or more first products into one or more articles or converting the one or more first products into one or more second products. The converting may be a second stage fermentation process. The fermentations may be any combination of aerobic and anaerobic, batch and continuous.
